Black Caucus Responds To Barr Confirmation

WASHINGTON – Today, the Congressional Black Caucus Chair, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Senate voting to confirm William Barr to serve as Attorney General.

“The Department of Justice should be focused on strengthening police accountability, expanding voting rights, and restoring justice for non-violent offenders. Today, I fear, the United States Senate has confirmed someone who will not prioritize any of those issues, each of which disproportionately impact African Americans across the country. Regardless, the Congressional Black Caucus will continue to work to ensure that these issues are addressed and we hope that the new Attorney General will work alongside us, and not against us, in our efforts.”

On February 6, 2019, the CBC sent a letter in opposition to the confirmation of William Barr as Attorney General, citing his decades-long career in support of policies that only perpetuate our broken criminal justice system and its disproportionate impacts on the African American community.
