According to recent reports, a IT staffing and recruiting tech company posted a job description for a “mid-senior level business development” person. The description added that the job candidates be “preferably Caucasian.” Congresswoman Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, issued the following statement in response:
“Let’s be clear, not only was this job posting blatantly racist, it was also illegal,” said Chairwoman Bass. “Employment discrimination on the basis of race or color is strictly prohibited under federal law. Unfortunately, this job posting only confirms what we already know to be true about the overall lack of diversity within the technology sector. When it comes to diversity and inclusion of African Americans, the tech industry continues to struggle with moving the needle. Decades of research shows that diversity is good for innovation and the economic bottom line, yet we continue to find ourselves combating all forms of bias in the recruitment, hiring and retention of African American and women workers. Through our CBC Tech 2020 initiative the CBC will continue to push technology companies to seek out skilled African Americans who are more than qualified to serve in any position, particularly in the boardroom where diversity is particularly lacking.”
