Congressional Black Caucus Statement on the Passing of Emily Clyburn

Today, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) issued the following statement on the passing of Dr. Emily England Clyburn, wife of Majority Whip and senior CBC member Rep. James E. Clyburn.

“It is with great sadness that the Congressional Black Caucus learns of the passing of our colleague Majority Whip James E. Clyburn’s wife, Emily Clyburn. Mrs. Clyburn was known for activism and philanthropic work. In her role as a librarian, Mrs. Clyburn helped raise thousands of dollars to help students afford college. As a result of her strong presence, she became a fixture within her community. Mr. and Mrs. Clyburn met in jail when Mr. Clyburn was arrested in a civil-rights protest and they were together for 58 years. This is a tremendous loss to the entire CBC family. We extend our sincerest condolences to her husband, children, grandchildren, friends, and all those impacted by her remarkable life and work.”
