On February 23, Ahmaud Arbery, a young, vibrant Black man was killed in broad daylight, in Brunswick, Georgia. His crime? He was jogging while Black in his neighborhood. The killing of Ahmaud Arbery shows us that the spirit of lynching is still alive and well in our nation and something that we cannot tolerate.
It has been more than ten weeks and no arrests have been made. While the Arbery family deals with the heartache, the murderers Greg McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, are home living freely.
The Congressional Black Caucus demands the immediate arrest of Greg McMichael and Travis McMichael, who viciously ended Ahmaud Arbery’s life on February 23. It is disturbing that Greg McMichael’s former employment with the Glynn County Police Department, has played a biased role in ensuring the two men were not arrested immediately at the time of the incident. But no person is above the law, and justice must be served. The Congressional Black Caucus is also calling for the case to be opened outside of Glynn County, specifically independently in the Southern District Court of Georgia.
It is unconscionable that a time when COVID-19 has adversely impacted our people and small businesses, Black America must also mourn the loss of another innocent Black man at the hands of white supremacy and police brutality. This violence against unarmed Black people cannot continue.
