Congressional Black Caucus Issues Statement on New Alabama Congressional Map

Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (NV-04) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement regarding the new Alabama Congressional map:

“In defiance of the Supreme Court ruling in Allen v. Milligan, which required states like Alabama to give Black voters more voting power and fairer representation, the Republican-controlled state legislature chose to again put forth a map that robs Black voters of their fundamental rights at the ballot box.

“Today, a three-judge court had the final say, and Black voters in Alabama will now have the opportunity to choose another preferred candidate that will take their values to Congress. While this is a victory for Democracy and Black voters in Alabama, we must be clear that efforts to disenfranchise Black voters are alive and well around our country.

"The CBC will continue our efforts in Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act.”
