Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement:
“At this very moment, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a father, husband, and union worker, is being held in one of the most dangerous prisons in the world. What the Trump Administration has done is disgusting, racist, illegal, and cannot stand. It is unthinkable that while in the Oval Office, President Trump, in the presence of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, openly mocked the U.S. courts and vowed to persecute more American citizens as the administration has with Mr. Garcia.
“Despite a court order, the Trump Administration has so far refused to facilitate Mr. Garcia’s return despite acknowledging in court that he was wrongly targeted and should not have been deported. The Trump Administration’s actions and complete disregard for the law is a slippery slope – one that raises severe questions. If the federal government can, without impunity, forcibly remove a resident with legal status from the U.S., then no American’s rights are truly safe in this country. Either President Trump is above the law, or he is not.
“Congress cannot be held in the dark. We are demanding transparency and a full accounting of any other individuals who may have been wrongfully targeted by this administration. The Supreme Court must immediately act to hold the administration accountable – including holding them in contempt for their clear wrongdoing.”
