Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) signed a letter that was delivered to House Speaker John Boehner today, calling on the Speaker to restore funding for SNAP (food stamps) and other nutrition programs to the farm bill. The Congresswoman issued the following statement regarding the letter, which was signed by a total of 205 House Democrats in support of a comprehensive farm bill:

“The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is critically needed to alleviate hunger and food insecurity for more than 47 million Americans. It reaches some of our most vulnerable citizens: one of out every three children in our nation lives in a household receiving SNAP and nearly 75% of all SNAP recipients are either children, seniors or the disabled. Given the vital importance of SNAP, I believe the responsible way forward is to include a nutrition title in the farm bill that provides adequate funding for the program. House Republicans, however, took a different course and not only did they remove the feeding initiatives from the farm bill that passed in July, but they also are now reportedly considering slashing SNAP by $40 billion.“

“Feeding and farming go hand in hand. We are one nation, but we are certainly not acting like it when the needs of hungry Americans are put on the back burner. Let’s get back to business and work toward passing a comprehensive farm bill - the sooner, the better.”
