CBC Chairman Statement on White House Criticism of Reps. Lewis, Thompson

Today, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA-02), released a statement in response to White House criticism of Congressman John Lewis (D-GA-05) and Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS-02). The White House criticized Congressman Lewis’ and Congressman Thompson’s decision not to attend the opening ceremony of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, Mississippi, because President Trump will be there. Congressman Lewis and Congressman Thompson believe that President Trump’s presence at the ceremony and his Administration’s policies are an “insult” to the people honored by the museum.

“It’s laughable that the White House is criticizing John Lewis and Bennie Thompson for not attending the opening of a civil rights museum that honors the sacrifice of ....wait..... John Lewis, Bennie Thompson, and many others.

“This White House is not serious about civil rights. From dismantling the civil rights division in DOJ to equating peaceful people who protested racism to Neo-nazi’s and White Supremacists, they just don’t get it.”
