Statement from CBC Chairman on the Appointment of Booker, Harris to Senate Judiciary Committee

Today, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA-02), released the following statement on the appointment of Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On December 7, Chairman Richmond sent a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urging him to appoint a CBC member to the Committee after Senator Al Franken (D-MN) announced his intent to resign.

“Today, Senator Booker and Senator Harris, two great attorneys who are committed to 21st century criminal justice reform, were appointed to the Senate Judiciary Committee, becoming the 2nd and 3rd African Americans to serve on the Committee in its 200-plus-year history.

“The Congressional Black Caucus could not be more proud of both of our Senate members and know the experience and expertise they bring to the Committee will be beneficial for all Americans, especially those disproportionately targeted by the criminal justice system.”
