Today, the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA-02), released the following statement after the Senate voted 50-48 to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court: 

“The Congressional Black Caucus’ position was and still is that the Senate should have rejected JudgeKavanaugh’s nomination based on his record on equality, justice, and executive power.

“But, if that wasn’t enough for the Senate, the credible sexual assault allegations against JudgeKavanaugh should have been — they should have at least been enough to warrant a thorough FBI investigation as Democrats and the American Bar Association urged, not the jack-leg FBI investigation that was done instead. So credible were the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh that the only thing missing was DNA evidence and a confession. 

“Some votes more than others require an elected official to put politics aside completely and do what is right for the country — and today’s vote was such a vote. Some votes more than others are a window into an elected official’s conscience and character — and today’s vote was such a vote. Some votes more than others show you whether an elected official is willing to do what is courageous or comfortable in moments of conflict and controversy — and today’s vote was such a vote.

“Sadly and shamefully, 50 senators, including one Democrat, failed this test of leadership and a man who has credible sexual assault allegations against him and lied repeatedly under oath, will be a justice on the highest court in the land. These senators can and should have done better for the court and the country.”
